La Cote 314

The hill on which the little chapel stands (known as Montjoie or Cote 314) played a major role in the violent battle that took place from August 6 to 12, 1944. During the Mortain counter-attack, an American battalion was surrounded at the top of the hill. Casualties were high. The town of Mortain, previously spared by the bombardments, was more than 80% destroyed. 1 route can be explored from the site of the little chapel, including a commemorative area and a visit to the Montjoie rocks, where the troops were stationed.
